Course Offerings

Search and Rescue for the Medic. Online course developed to provide an introduction to basic skills needed to function with a Search and Rescue team from a medic or firefighting perspective. The class seeks to provide conceptual knowledge of basic map and compass skills, refresh the learner with knots helpful to search and rescue personnel and provide a primer on patient evaluation and extraction. This is also a good course for individuals who are interested in becoming a search and rescue volunteer and are getting ready to take the NASAR FUNSAR course.

This class is fully online and is available here and is eligible for PA EMS Continuing Education.

Pre-requisites: none.

Co-requisites: in person field day highly recommended after course completion.

Rescue Response for SAR. **Recently Updated content* In person course that provides students a high-level overview of initial actions, SAR resources, basic clue awareness, and patient care. Students are provided with an opportunity to practice the skills reviewed in Search and Rescue for the Medic in a hands-on environment. The students will get to participate in a complete search evolution.

This course is eligible for PA EMS continuing education credit.

Pre-requisites: Search and Rescue for the Medic recommended.

Comfortable Medicine in Uncomfortable Places. Designed specifically for search and rescue personnel and medical providers in all settings that regularly interact with search and rescue crews. The class provides an opportunity for deep dives into topics such as patient assessment and initial patient care and stabilization, resource management, patient extraction. The course is 36 hours in duration and culminates in day and night time evolutions. The students medical scope of practice is applied to course topics. Select BLS equipment is re-introduced in the context of application to caring for the wilderness patient.

This course is eligible for PA EMS continuing education credit.

Pre-requisites: SARTECH II or greater with WFA; or EMR or higher. Current BLS AHA CPR. Any other student by instructor permission.

Search and Rescue Mission Management. Written for Search and Rescue managers, law enforcement, fire department incident command staff, forestry, and parks personnel who are responsible for leading search and rescue efforts. This class provides a high level overview of considerations specific to requesting, deploying, and properly integrating a search and rescue team into your next missing person callout. Students will be introduced to concepts in lost person behavior, search and rescue resource typing, and specific resources that comprise most search and rescue teams.

The class is an 8 hour didactic class with a table top exercise utilizing a common SAR mapping program and integrating IAP development to set up the first operational period.

Prerequisites: SARTECH III or above (optional), incident command staff (optional), ICS 300
